CHAPTER TWELVE

Ashley watched, incensed, as the deputy left, then looked around, trying to figure out the next step in the investigation. A car pulled up beside her with an arm waving out the driver's side window.

“Hey!” Patty called out from her car. “I thought you might still be here.” She looked a little closer at Ashley's face. “Are you okay? You look like someone has irritated you, to put it mildly.”

“Yeah, I'll be fine in a minute,” Ashley answered. “The deputy who just left made me think that no one is concentrating on solving this case but the two of us. He didn't come out and say that they weren't working seriously on it, but he sort of implied that the case wasn’t a top priority because the victim was older, maybe sick, and alone. Even as annoying as Luna has been in the past, I've never heard him downplay a murder, so the attitude caught me off guard.”

“Sounds like we need to keep looking into this, then,” Patty said. “Have you talked to your friend Beth about the case yet?”

“No, I guess I should,” Ashley said. “I don't really feel like we've learned enough to make a difference yet, so I haven't called. I was standing here, trying to decide what to do next. Calling her was one of the options I was considering.”

“Well, I talked to Ozzie Eckles' Mom, and she confirmed that he was at their house the night of the murder,” Patty reported. “I didn't even have to ask her anything. I mentioned the food truck, and she started telling me all about her son, who runs a mechanic's shop and is apparently the only competent mechanic in the whole county. Then she told me that he never misses the weekly family dinner and that he's been working so hard lately that he even spent the night with them after the last one. She fixed his favorite breakfast for him the next morning and sent him on his way.”

“That's progress, anyway,” Ashley said, “even if it does leave us with only some pretty weak suspects on the list. In fact, Ray Summers is the only one left on my list, what about you?”

“The only other person we've talked to who knew Barney is Rhona,” Patty said. “She doesn't seem to have a motive to kill him, but I guess she's on my list if for no other reason than to keep from having an empty list!”

“Look over there,” Ashley said. “Ray's still here. Maybe we can get some more information from him. I really don't know of a motive for him. Ozzie said we should consider him, but it sounded like Ray would have had more reason to kill Ozzie than Barney.”

Patty killed the car engine and stepped out of the car. “Let's see what the man has to say for himself, then.”

“Ray! Mr. Summers,” Patty hollered, waving her arms to get his attention. “Ray Summers!”

The man turned around and waved back. Ray met them halfway across the sales lot.
